History| A short introduction

The first written mention of the place of Sauerburg originates from the year 1120 in the so-called "Conradus da Waldekke". 1355-1361 construction of the castle "Surburne" at the behest of Count Ruprecht with the permission of the archbishop Gerlach of Mainz.

In the following centuries the castle has gone through several constructions and destructions, like the destruction of 1689 by the self-called "sun god" Louis XIV, whome was mistakenly attributet the guiding principle of absolutism "L'Etat, c'est moi! I am the state!".

In the 14th century castles were often used for administration in the vicinity of a customs facility and were also often used for hunting. The area around the Sauerburg 1291 belonged the castle palatine's at rhine. They belonged to the important customs facility "Kaub" and the Sauerburg was supposed to protect it. It also should protect from the nearby castle "Waldeck". In the year 2004 the Sauerburg was completely renovated and is now a gem and landmark for the "Sauerthal".
